On a Saturday morning in mid-October, we arrived at Eagle’s Nest Park. Located within Bancroft, the area is a perfect spot for scenic views (especially If you are driving through on the way to Algonquin). There are four trails at just over 3 km total to explore.
The gates of Eagles Nest Park road were open, and we drove up the short but steep road to reach two parking lots.
We began to hike the Lookout Trail which bends along the escarpment edge towards the observation deck, called Hawkwatch Platform. It was an easy hike of just over half a kilometre, with not much change in elevation.
Hawkwatch Platform offers stunning views of the valley of Bancroft including Hastings Street, the York River, and Bancroft Ridge Golf Club. The hills that surround the horizon of the view are a result of glacial activity, receding around 10,000 years ago.
We enjoyed our visit, and will always make a point of visiting each time we visit Bancroft.

We just missed the sugar maples turning bright red, when we visited they were mostly bare. I’ve heard that the driveway up to the top of the cliff is closed in the winter, but you may be able to hike up the hill to see the winter scenery.
